A healthcare professional or worker promotes health by providing health care services, preventive, and curative measures to individuals, families, and communities. Studies have shown that there is a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals in rural and underserved communities. A shortage of health care workers in rural areas can have a significant impact on access to health services (Buchan et al., 2013). As the shortage of health professional continues to rise, federal programs such as Health Professional Shortage Areas and Medically Underserved Areas/Population were implemented to improve and alleviate patient access to healthcare in rural communities (Wang, 2012). (3) How can interventions reduce health disparities in rural communities? There have been few studies that have addressed the outcomes of retention interventions in r ural communities. Health care interventions can be categorized as any form of treatment, test, or preventive care that can help improve the person’s overall well-being or help to lessen a specific problem. Research findings shows that interventions are effective methods for improving, attracting, and retaining health care workers in rural areas. Mbemba, Gagnon, Parà ©, and Cotà © (2013) recommended interventions that will help retain nurses in rural and remote areas by using review authors’ conclusions that addressed the effectiveness of interventions in remote and rural communities. Mbemba, Gagnon, Parà ©, and Cotà © (2013) categorized interventions for remote and rural nurse retention based on the model proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). They used four types of interventions from the WHO model: financial incentives included (i.e. service requiring scholarships, educational loans with service requirement and direct payments); education and continuous professional development interventions involve career choices such as, nursing, medical, and allied health; regulatory interventions recognizes foreign qualifications that+ applied mainly to physicians; and per sonal and professional support
